This is slightly more advanced than the traditional face-to-face CGS1000 class.

It requires more self-discipline than the traditional face-to-face class.

Course Description:  CGS 1000 Computer Information Systems (3) (A.A.) This Distance Learning course is slightly more advanced than the traditional CGS1000 class. It requires more self-discipline. This course surveys the computing field. The student is introduced to computer hardware, software, storage concepts, local area networks, data communications, data security, privacy issues, the copyright law, file management techniques, email, the Internet, and productivity software using an integrated software package.

Text/Materials Required:

Book 1: Discovering Computers 2010, Shelly/Cashman (ISBN 978032478645X) for Exams

Book 2: Microsoft Office 2007, Shelly/Cashman  (ISBN-13: 978-1-4239-1228-6) for Assignments

 

As an SCF student you can now buy Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate for only $59.95.

 

Assuming the student meets all the grading criteria, students may submit assignments using Microsoft Office 2000, XP, 2003, 2007 or even Open Office. (You can download OpenOffice.org for free; it is compatible with Office 97-2003.) However the textbooks and most assignments and examples use MS Office 2007 software. If Office 2007 software is not available from a PC at home or work, you may use the Computer Lab at SCF or utilize the free software trial downloads which are available from www.microsoft.com for 60 days. The Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack is available to allow previous versions of Office to open and convert Office 2007 documents. Work may also be saved from Office 2007 to Office 97-2003 formats.

Student Responsibility: All assignments should be emailed to the instructor through the Angel online learning software platform by the due dates provided in the assignment schedule shown on this syllabus.

Additional questions and correspondence should be submitted to the instructor through Angel email. Proofread, Spell-check, professionally write, and include a meaningful Subject line for all email. Label all assignment email with the assignment name in the Subject line, such as Word 4 Assignment and your issue. The instructor will answer all correspondence within 48 hours.

Students are expected to abide by all Lancer Student Handbook guidelines.

 

Withdrawal Policy: In accordance with the State College of Florida policy as stated in the college catalog, students may withdraw from any course or all courses without academic penalty of a WF by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the State College of Florida academic calendar. See the online Academic Calendar for important dates.   The student must take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their instructors first before taking any withdrawal action.

Statement of Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect wording of another scholar and/or writer—professional or student—without giving proper credit. Expulsion, suspension, or any lesser penalty may be imposed for plagiarism. Copying another student's work will result in a zero for both students.

Course Evaluation: The instructor will post weekly grade updates through Angel. Each class assignment is worth 100 points. Grading criteria for each assignment are provided below. Additional student resources are available on the instructor’s website.

Your professor will grade all projects at least once or twice a week.

Your professor will often check and answer all Angel emails 5 or 6 days a week.

 

Late Assignments Policy: Five points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late for the first 5 days, and 1 point will deducted for each day late thereafter. For instance, if it is 7 days late, the grade will be 73. (5 days x 5 points for the first five days, 2 days x 1 point for the next two days late.)

 

1. It is not hard to get a 100 on almost all assignments - just check to make sure you satisfy all of the grading criteria, which are clearly listed in the syllabus for each assignment.

The final exam is a 100 question, multiple choice, closed book, proctored exam based on the Discovering Computers 2010 book. It is worth 300 points. A Photo ID will be required. See the Final Exam Terms link on the Angel Web site or click here for a list of the terms that will be on the exam. There will be no makeup for the Final Exam.

The final exam will be in the same format and come from the same test bank as your practice quizzes.
