Each student will create an anthology of 10 contemporary poems
by at least 5 poets from
one of the following geographical regions. No two students may choose the same region.
Each poet must have been alive in 1975. The collection will include:
A Cover
Page and Table
of Contents (5 points)
A well-structured and specifically focused
Introductory Essay
(500-750 words) in which you
discuss contemporary poetic concerns and techniques in
the region. Create a tight thesis into which you can introduce your
poets: it might have to do with political concerns, stylistic
innovations, unusual thematic concerns, etc. Be detailed and specific -- at least two scholarly secondary sources must be cited.
Encyclopedias and dictionaries do not count as scholarly sources. (35 points)
10 Poems with
date written/published and translator, if applicable. (25 points)
Brief Biographical
Sketches
of each of the authors including dates of
birth and death, if applicable, and major publications. Cite the sources of
information. (10 points)
A Bibliography,
containing the source of each poem and any other information used in the
anthology, that follows MLA
Documentation Style.
Each poet and poem, of course, should have a separate citation. (15 points)
You are encouraged to be creative in the publication of your
anthology. (10 points)
In
class you will discuss the contemporary poetry of the region you have chosen and
share a few poems with the class.
Your presentation
should last about 10
