The Brief Handbook bring to every class IC: in-class EEC: English Electronic Classroom (Room 333) |
** indicates GROUP WORK; any student missing class or coming unprepared to class will lose
ONE FULL GRADE
on essay for each class missed. |
|
The class will be
divided into groups of 3-4 students. Each group will choose an non-profit
agency or
organization in the community for which you would consider working or
volunteering. You will need to visit and learn about the organization in
order to complete this assignment. You may visit as a group or individually,
but you need to make arrangements ahead of your visit to interview at
least one person who works at the organization.
1. DEFINITION: define the purpose of the organization. 2. DESCRIPTION: describe the locale of the organization, the building, the offices, etc. 3. EXAMPLE: give a specific example or two of what function the organization performs in the community. 4. COMPARISON/CONTRAST: compare and contrast your organization with another organization in the community that performs a similar function (the second organization may be profit or non-profit). 5. PROCESS ANALYSIS ("how to"): explain or analyze how the organization achieves one of its goals. Follow the process from the beginning to the end: BE SURE TO INCLUDE EACH STEP. 6. CLASSIFICATION: divide into categories the personnel (paid and/or volunteer) who work for the organization. Focus specifically on the tasks they perform. 7. CAUSAL ANALYSIS (cause and effect): describe an effect the organization has had on an individual, a particular group or the community as a whole. Be specific as to how the organization's efforts created the effect. Your paragraphs should have specific information and be
UNIFIED, COMPLETE,
COHERENT,
CONSISTENT and CORRECT. PUBLICATION: Include a Works Consulted List for any information you obtained from the organization including interviews, pamphlets, articles, information sheets, etc.
Your PPT presentation should not merely be a copy of your paragraphs. PPT presentations are usually bulleted visual aids that emphasize the important points in an oral presentation (much like an outline). You may include graphic images on the slides, but these are not required. Be sure that your PPT slide can be read easily by all members in the class. Use a clear font of at least 20 pts, and be sure that the background does not obscure the text. If you use many graphic images, the presentation may have to be saved on a zip disk rather than on a regular disk. Please ask for help earlier rather than later. Plan to review and rehearse your PPT presentation before the class at which you will present it.
