21st century poet casebook

Choose a living
poet writing in English (if you speak another language than English, you
may choose a poet writing in that language IF you can also find English
translations of his/her poems). You will create a casebook on the poet
and present the poet to the class. No one in the class may choose the same poet. Choices are first come, first served. Post your choice on the WebBoard under the Casebook heading. No choices until after the first class meeting. |

the casebook
must contain
a cover page (5 pts)
a table of contents (5 pts)
a brief biography of the poet (100-250 words) with a picture of the poet -- if no picture is available, choose an image that represents the poet to you. Include a list of the poet's major publications, any awards received, etc. (5 pts)
10 of your favorite poems by the poet (20 pts)
xeroxes or printouts of 2 critical reviews of the poet -- these may be book reviews published in reputable periodicals (NY TIMES, Salon.com, The New York Review of Books) or critical articles published in academic journals or books (use the library or LINCC's online electronic resources) (20 pts)
your analytical close-reading of one poem or a comparison/contrast of two poems by the poet (1000-1500 words). Use the "Checklist for Exploring Poems" on the inside cover of Vendler's text (more fully described in Chapter 4) as the basis for your close readings. (75 pts)
MLA formatted Bibliography -- must contain a citation for each poem, the poet's biographical information, the two critical reviews, and any other information used in the casebook (20 pts)
