PAPER GUIDELINES

***Paper is due: Thursday, Dec 10th and Friday, Dec 11th

Sample outline

Your Choice must coincide with the time period covered within this class.

1) Select a visual art (sculpture, architecture, fresco, oil painting, photography, or     film.) or
2) Select a performing art (theatre, dance, or music) or
3) Select a literary art (prose or poetry )

Discuss the following:
(1) the form of the art ( suggestions as noted below)
(2) the cultural and artistic contexts or circumstances that generated the art
(3) the effects, influences, or outcome: of the particular art form you select

Examples of FORM may include medium, materials, tools, and execution:

VISUAL ARTS
Lines-may be linear, regular, irregular, horizontal, vertical, diagonal
Color-hues, contrast, combination, symbolism
Light-flat, dramatic, creation of depth
Pattern-decorative, realistic, repetitive,

SCULPTURE
three dimensional, freestanding, contraposato1 relief-low, high carved, molded, assembled, cast, texture additive or subtractive, relation to site.

ARCHITECTURE
materials, design exterior embellishment Interior embellishment (relationship between the two)
use of other arts-sculpture, fresco etc.

THEATRE
staging, set, costumes, theatrical devices, lighting, selected scenes, choreography plot, theme, characterization-relationship to other art forms i.e., prose, film etc,

LITERATURE
point of view, plot, character development, Imagery, theme,
literary devices-description, exposition, literary form-epic poem, myth, prose, poetry, satire etc.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Papers are to be a FULL 8-10 pages in length. If you use in text pictures be sure to add an equal number of lines of text. The 8-10 page length does NOT INCLUDE the full sentence outline and works cited page. Papers are to be DOUBLE spaced and typed using a computer font of 11 point. The margins should be one inch on all sides except on the bottom, which may be an inch and ½. Please number each page on the top right hand corner.

The works cited page should have at least ten sources. Use the MLA style for your papers.For a quick reference guide check-http://www.docstyles.com/mlacrib.htm
Place your paper in a double pocket paper folder with your paper, full sentence outline and works cited page on one side and the Xeroxed copies of research on the other.

Any observation, assertion, data, direct, or indirect wording of another scholar, professional, or student (anything that is not original with you) needs to be referenced in such a way that you indicate the source of your information.

Take care that your paper is organized clearly. Work for smooth transitions between your outline elements and a summary of your position at the conclusion. At the beginning of your paper you will need a COMPLETE sentence outline including an essay map or thesis statement and sub-point development.
