Journal Assignments for
Journal #1:
After conducting
an interview with your partner, free-write
for five minutes about what you learned regarding him or her. Seek out an understanding of what this person
wants (or wanted) to find in their life.
As you free-write, you might also try to come up with additional
questions you would like to ask him or her.
After
free-writing, use any one of the other techniques (like looping or clustering)
described on pages 199-204 to come up with more ideas regarding your interview.
After writing
this journal, e-mail your partner a message that
· Describes some of the ideas you came up
with through freewriting and
· Additional questions you would like him
or her to answer.
Journal #2
Part I: (Answer
the following question by free-writing for five minutes.) What is the angle of “Johnny Deep:
Unlikely Superstar” by Sean Smith?
What concrete details from
the essay make this angle clear?
Part II: Quote a line of dialogue from your interview
with your partner. How might that line
of dialogue help you demonstrate the angle of your own essay? (Free-write for
five more minutes)
JOURNAL #3: On what criteria

JOURNAL
#4: Now that we have finished watching O
Brother, Where Art Thou?, review what you said about your own criteria for
a film at the top of the note sheet.
Now, in your journal, write for five minutes about how you felt about
the movie. Did it meet the criteria you
set? Why or why not?
JOURNAL
#5: Analyze the picture I assign you
and discuss whether or not it fits into how you imagine poverty. Are there stereotypes concerning people who
live in poverty? What are the
stereotypes? Does the picture reflect
the stereotypes you imagine, or does it show something different from you would
expect? Do you think Diana George would
describe it as an effective representation
of poverty in
JOURNAL

which ones stood out the most? Why?
Journal
7: If you could choose any career, what
would it be? What would be your ideal
job? Describe three aspects of your

suited for this profession?

Journal 8: View this PowerPoint. Write two sentences for each bumper
sticker. Is there a clear and arguable
position for each one? Write one
sentence for the argument that the bumper sticker is making. Then, write another sentence for the opposite argument. Use your own words for each.
For homework, add more to your journal
by creating a series of lists for yourself.
Use pages 95-96 as guides. After
listing, determine one issue to write about.
Determine whether or not it’s a good issue by finding an article from
either Issues and Controversies or Opposing Viewpoints. (An Internet article will NOT be
acceptable). To find the databases, do
the following:

Enter your borrower i.d. (this is your

Journal 9: Choose one or two sentences from “Just Be
Nice” that you either strongly agree
with or strongly disagree with. Then in a sentence using a signal phrase, quote the lines you’ve chosen. Be sure to include parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence. Then describe your reaction to the “Just Be
Nice.” Can you think of other actions
that you or others might find offensive?

JOURNAL 10: First, review the standards for good paraphrasing on pages 363-366. Then, test your own ability by with the following passage: “Americans live in a culture of abundance. They have always had a sense that great opportunities lie just over the horizon, in the next valley, with the next job or the next big thing. None of us is really poor, we’re just pre-rich” (Brooks 626).
· Read it three times
· Then I’m turning off the screen—when I do, I’ll ask you to paraphrase this passage with a signal phrase and a parenthetical citation.
· Then, I’m going to ask you to write about what you think of the Brooks’ point. What is the meaning of his title? What seems to be his stance toward his topic?
JOURNAL 11: In one or two sentences, summarize Maggie Cutler’s argument.
Mention the “rule of the real” in your summary, and include a parenthetical citation. Once done, continue the journal by expressing
your viewpoint. Did you find her
argument convincing? Why or why not?
JOURNAL
12: To brainstorm for the I-Search
paper, freewrite about one of the following:
•
A
profession or career you want to enter
•
An
aspect of your cultural background that interests you.
•
An
issue or problem that might affect you at some point in the future.
•
A
figure from history or popular culture you’re interested in.
•
Or,
a topic that you know something about and would like to learn more.
JOURNAL
13: Do some preliminary research on a
subject you think you might want to research.
What did you find? Write a
paragraph about the type of sources that would be available and how
“researchable” the subject seems.
JOURNAL 14:

Part I: Read this statement, which I’ve “borrowed” from page 564. Is it plagiarism? Why or why not? If it IS plagiarism, how might you fix it?
In some instances, students become homeless when
they get away from an abuser. Others end
up without housing because they can’t pay for it as a result of losing a job,
having their unemployment benefits dropped, getting ill, having their child
support benefits stopped, or getting into substance abuse.
Part II: Bader quotes quite a few people. Which quotation stood out to you the
most? Quote the statement in a sentence
of your own, using a signal phrase and a parenthetical citation. Then, explain why the quotation stood out to
you.
JOURNAL
15: Write an annotated bibliography
listing for Stanley Fish’s “Who’s In Charge Here?” (Your description should
consist of at least three complete sentences.)
After
doing this, write a response to Fish’s argument by assessing who he sees as the
audience of his essay? Does he seem to
write with students in mind? Why or why
not? What do YOU see as a problem in
higher education?
JOURNAL 16: On page 580, someone writes, “We are really breaking the silence about women’s health issues.” Quote this statement in a sentence of your own, using a signal phrase and a parenthetical citation. Then, explain what this person means.
Also, think about
your own culture. What issues aren’t
discussed openly?
JOURNAL 17: Now that you’ve learned about blogs in “Meet
Joe Blog,” take a few minutes to imagine the kind of blog that YOU would choose
to write. Would it be about music?
Politics? Something else? (Hint:
If you can’t think of anything, why not use your iSearch topic?) Decide
what it would be, then write your first blog entry. Since this is imaginary, feel free to invent
material. Have fun!
