TONE EXERCISE (TEN POINTS)

Length: two paragraphs (150 words each)

Consult: it is essential to consult student samples

                                         SELECT 1 OR 2

1.  Compose two paragraphs or brief essays (each of about 150 to

200 words) on the same person, event, or concept.  In the first

essay use an objective tone to describe the topic; in the second

essay employ a subjective tone (either "positive"  or "negative"),

thus revealing an attitude about the person,  event, or idea you

have chosen as a topic.  Label each essay:

      a) objective or subjective

      b) For the subjective essay add additional headings:

         1) "positive" or "negative"

         2) a term or phrase which characterizes the degree of

enthusiasm or distaste you wished to convey. Use an

adjective and perhaps an adverb qualifier: for example,

bitter, guardedly optimistic, hopeful, extremely hopeful,

scathingly sarcastic, aloof, naïve, arrogant, uncertain,

wounded, defensive, overly cautious, spiteful, etc.

2.  Repeat topic selection (1) but use two subjective approaches  to

the same topic.  As with topic (1), please provide a term  or

phrase characterizing the two different subjective tones you have

adopted for this assignment.  Label each essay:

         a) "positive" or "negative"

         b) additional heading: a term or phrase which characterizes the

degree of enthusiasm or distaste you wished to convey. Use

an adjective and perhaps an adverb qualifier: for example,

bitter, guardedly optimistic, extremely hopeful, scathingly

sarcastic, aloof, naïve, arrogant, uncertain, wounded,

             defensive, overly cautious, spiteful, etc.
