RESEARCH PAPER: Global Awareness and Outreach: Non-governmental Organizations

This assignment meets the course requirement for a research paper.

ASSIGNMENT:To encourage cultural relativity and global and diversity awareness, this assignment asks you to investigate and analyze non-governmental organizations (also called non-profits) that operate in the third world. Your assignment is an original and compelling thesis-driven essay in which you develop a thesis about an non-governmental organization (NGO or INGO) of your choice. This is not a report on the NGO, but a paper that presents a thesis (a main point, conclusion, or opinion) about some current trend, controversy, or breakthrough which is supported completely by well-documented research. You will receive 2 extra style points if you choose this topic.

LENGTH: A five-paragraph theme of 750 to 1200 words

RESEARCH:  Evidence must derive from a minimum of five approved sources

(typically current periodical articles from the MCC library databases; and print sources such as  books, magazines, or newspapers)

FORMAT:  Cover page, paper, and Works Cited.  The paper must be typed with standard margins: use MLA manuscript guidelines in the Keys, Chapter 20

ORGANIZATION: a five-paragraph theme (think of the snow man):

1) An introductory paragraph with hook, thesis, and 3 sub-points.   

(Support your thesis with at least three sub-points (sub-categories of evidence) which will represent three body paragraphs of your paper).

2) Three body paragraphs with topic sentences and a minimum of three pieces of evidence in each body paragraph

  3) A conclusion

DOCUMENTATION: Provide proper attribution for all evidence using

correct MLA (Modern Language Association) internal documentation and a correctly formatted Works Cited attached at the end of the paper.   The Works Cited is an alphabetical list of all sources from which evidence for your essay was taken and cited.  It does not include any annotations.  Consult Keys, 203
