Performance Standards:
Students may access course

Gordon
Rule: This course meets the
Florida State Board of Education Rule Number 6-A-10.30. In accordance with
this rule, students will complete written assignments totaling 6,000 words.
A grade of C or better is required for credit in Gordon Rule classes.

Attendance
Policy: Students who are absent are responsible for all announcements
made, assignments given, and material covered. An allowance of four hours
of absence to cover illness and personal emergency is available, but if in-class
writing is missed due to illness, make-up work will only be accepted with
a medical excuse. Excessive absences (more than four hours) will result in
points off the grade or a student being asked to withdraw from the course.

ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect working
of another scholar and/or writer--professional or student--without giving
proper credit. Expulsion, suspension, or any lesser penalty may be imposed

of Conduct: Students are
expected to abide by all Lancer Student Handbook guidelines.
Course
Objectives: The
objectives of Written Communication 1101 are to acquaint the student with
basic concepts of essay writing and to assist him or her, through frequent
evaluation of assigned essays and projects, to apply these concepts effectively. The
student will master rhetorical modes, critical thinking and reading skills,
essay test strategies, appropriate research and documentation skills, and
tools for oral presentation and visual rhetoric. Through various assignments
and activities, this course will introduce and reinforce the core skills necessary
to succeed in the 21st Century. In this course, there will be a special
emphasis on technology skills related to communication such as power point
presentation, research through electronic resources, and website evaluation.
Course
Materials and Assignments: This
is a paperless course. All materials including syllabi, announcements,
assignments, study aids, class notes, and relevant websites can be accessed
from the instructor’s website listed above. Hard copies of any materials
may be printed in the classroom or in a computer lab on campus. Students
are expected to check the UPDATE
Manuscript
Format: The
final versions of all papers (except those written in class) must be typed
or printed ragged right from a word processor. All papers are to be double-spaced.
Late
Assignments: Homework assignments,
first and second draft versions of the formal papers, oral projects, and the
completed essays are due at the beginning of class on the due date which appears
on the syllabus and/or the UPDATE
Assignments
and Grading: In adherence
to the Gordon Rule, students will complete a minimum of 6000 words in their
projects, in-class essays, drafts, and out-of-class assignments. While
the course will feature formal assignments--which will carry the most weight
toward the grade--students will be expected to complete in-class exercises,
homework, and creative assignments. In addition, students will complete
a required oral component and a group project.
