Attendance Policy: Students who are absent are responsible for all announcements made, assignments given, and material covered. An allowance of four hours of absence to cover illness and personal emergency is available, but if in-class writing is missed due to illness, make-up work will only be accepted with a medical excuse. Excessive absences (more than four hours) will result in points off the grade or a student being asked to withdraw from the course.

Withdrawal Policy: In accordance with the Manatee Community College policy as stated in the college catalogue, students may withdraw from any course or all courses without academic penalty with a WF. Students may withdraw from the course of a WF by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the Manatee Community College academic calendar. This semester this date is March 23, 2009.. The student must take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their instructors first before taking any withdrawal action.

Plagiarism: The College defines academic cheating or plagiarism as follows: the use of ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect working of another scholar and/or writer--professional or student--without giving proper credit. Expulsion, suspension, or any lesser penalty may be imposed for plagiarism.

Standards of Conduct: Students are expected to abide by all Lancer Student Handbook guidelines.

Course Objectives: The objectives of Written Communication 1101 are to acquaint the student with basic concepts of essay writing and to assist him or her, through frequent evaluation of assigned essays and projects, to apply these concepts effectively. The student will master rhetorical modes, critical thinking and reading skills, essay test strategies, appropriate research and documentation skills, and tools for oral presentation and visual rhetoric. Through various assignments and activities, this course will introduce and reinforce the core skills necessary to succeed in the 21st Century. In this course, there will be a special emphasis on technology skills related to communication such as power point presentation, research through electronic resources, and website evaluation.

Course Materials and Assignments: This is a paperless course. All materials including syllabi, announcements, assignments, study aids, class notes, and relevant websites can be accessed from the instructor’s website listed above. Hard copies of any materials may be printed in the classroom or in a computer lab on campus. Students are expected to check the UPDATE BOX at the top of the 1101 Homepage before each class and/or several times a week and will be responsible for all posted announcements, assignments, and changes.

Manuscript Format: The final versions of all papers (except those written in class) must be typed or printed ragged right from a word processor. All papers are to be double-spaced.

Late Assignments: Homework assignments, first and second draft versions of the formal papers, oral projects, and the completed essays are due at the beginning of class on the due date which appears on the syllabus and/or the UPDATE BOX on the website. Any paper left in the instructor's mailbox will considered late. Students failing to meet the deadlines for the draft versions of papers risk up to a 20 % reduction in points.

Assignments and Grading: In adherence to the Gordon Rule, students will complete a minimum of 6000 words in their projects, in-class essays, drafts, and out-of-class assignments. While the course will feature formal assignments--which will carry the most weight toward the grade--students will be expected to complete in-class exercises, homework, and creative assignments. In addition, students will complete a required oral component and a group project.
