Course Description:  Three hours lecture per week, plus laboratory as assigned by instructor. Suggested prerequisite:  CGS 1000 or good computer background. This course will build on the study of integrated business software begun in CGS 1000 with intermediate work in word processing, spreadsheeting, database management and an introduction to presentation software. Integrating these applications to solve complex business problems will be emphasized. Additional special fees are required.

Text/Materials Required: Shelley, Cashman, Vermatt. Microsoft Office 2007 Advanced Concepts and Techniques, Thomson Course Technology, Boston, MA 2007. Click here to access student data files.

All text assignments and examples use MS Office 2007 software.  If this software is not available from a PC at home or work, you will need to use the Computer Lab at SCF. Free software trial downloads are available from this link within the MS website   for 60 days.  Student discounted software is available for purchase from Microsoft. To obtain information about this offer go to http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx. As an alternative to using MS Office, students can try Open Office, however directions for using this software are not available in the text or from the instructor.

It is strongly suggested that students complete the Learn It Online exercises that complement the text.  The practice tests for each unit of study will enhance your quiz preparation. The web address link is accessed through the:  book resource companion website. Many additional helpful links can be accessed through the instructor’s website.

Keyboard shortcuts offer alternative, and often quicker, ways to complete computer tasks. Click this link to obtain a listing of keyboard shortcuts: Helpful Keyboard Shortcut Commands.

Course Performance Requirements:  Students may access course performance standards by clicking on the “Course Performances Standards” link at the following web address:  http://www.scf.edu/Academ/Academ.cfm.  A hard copy may be obtained from the instructor or from the Department Office.

Student Responsibility: The responsibility for obtaining and completing all work rests solely upon the student.   All assignments should be emailed to the instructor through the Angel distance learning software platform by the dates provided in the assignment schedule. Additional questions and correspondence should be emailed to the instruction through Angel email. Be sure to include a clearly stated subject line in all email correspondence.  Chapters should be reviewed by the student before attending class. Students who are unable to take a scheduled quiz/exam must notify the instructor before the exam time period.  If the instructor is not notified, the student will not be able to make-up the exam. Students are expected to abide by all Lancer Student Handbook guidelines.

Attendance/Lateness: 100 total points are given to students that attend all scheduled classes on time.  Points will be deducted for absences and lateness.

Late Assignments Policy:  All late assignments must be turned in within one week of the assigned due date.  None will be accepted after that time allotted.  All late assignments will be deducted 50% after graded.  Late assignments will not be accepted the week before final exams.

Withdrawal Policy:  In accordance with the Manatee Community College policy as stated in the college catalog, students may withdraw from any course or all courses without academic penalty of a WF by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the Manatee Community College academic calendar. This semester this date is October 27. The student must take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their instructors first before taking any withdrawal action.

Statement of Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of ideas, facts, opinions, illustrative material, data, direct or indirect wording of another scholar and/or writer—professional or student—without giving proper credit. Expulsion, suspension, or any lesser penalty may be imposed for plagiarism. Copying another student's work will result in a zero for both students.

Course Evaluation: The instructor will post weekly grade updates through Angel. Each class assignment (15) is worth 33.33 points. Grading rubrics outlining specific assignment requirements are available for each assignment (found on instructor’s website). Additional student resources are available on the instructor’s website.
