By attending one of the following events and
writing a 500-word review of the event (typed and following MLA
guidelines),
students may earn up to 25 points of extra credit for each event (up to a total
of 50 points).
Reviews are
due no later than two weeks after the event.

a discussion by author 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, building 800, Selby Room. Sponsored by Swamp Scribes, the event is free and open to the public. Dorsey, author of Florida-based mystery novels, will discuss his writing experience and his works, including his latest novel, Gator A-Go-Go, released in January. The novel chronicles the adventures of main characters Serge A. Storms, a Florida serial killer, and his sidekick, Seymore "Coleman" Bunsen, as they make a film about spring break in Florida.A former newspaper journalist and editor who grew up in Florida, Dorsey combines his experience covering crime and courts with his knowledge of Florida history to create light-hearted mystery novels. His other novels include “Hurricane Punch,” “Atomic Lobster” and “Nuclear Jellyfish.” Dorsey will be available to sign autographs of his latest book on sale at the event. An exhibit of African-American sports photographs and Latin American art will be on display at the
Family Heritage House Museum at
The exhibit, “Latin Art, Passion & Identity,” features a variety
of artwork by Puerto Rican artists including oil, watercolor, abstract and
portraits.
Alma L. Vega, an art curator and Puerto Rican native, will be present at the
reception to discuss the exhibit, which is on loan from ArtCenter Sarasota.
The portion of the exhibit on African American sports titled,
“From Obscurity to Excellence,” chronicles the accomplishments of the
Negro League baseball players and the transition to playing in the major
leagues.
Also featured in the exhibit is former Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente, the first Latin American player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Clemente, a Puerto Rican native, was killed in a plane accident while attempting to deliver food, clothing and medical supplies to Nicaragua following an earthquake in 1972. A brief video about his story will be shown at the reception.
The exhibit will be on display until April 15.
Museum hours are 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday by appointment.

On March 16, Sarasota County will hold a special election and residents must decide if the Sarasota County School Tax should be extended for another four years to fund public schools in the county. This tax money is in addition to that provided by the State and it is assessed through property taxes. In order to learn more about this issue, the History/Politcal Science Club is hosting a nonpartisan debate at SCF Venice. Please join us to learn more about this important referendum and why your vote is important! Pizza will be provided on a first come first serve basis! |
