GUIDELINES FOR WRITING ART MUSEUM OR GALLERY REVIEWS

painter

1. Visit a local art museum or gallery with art pertaining to the course for which you are writing this review.   See the Sarasota Arts Council website for a list of Sarasota County cultural attractions and art galleries: http://www.sarasota-arts.org/.  Check the Thursday Ticket section of Herald Tribune for current exhibitions from Tampa to Pt. Charlotte. MCC events are announced on the MCC website at: http://www.mccfl.edu/pages/136.asp .

2. Include in your first paragraph the name of the museum or gallery, its location, the name of the owner of the gallery, the artist(s) being shown in the gallery, and/or the featured exhibit at the museum.

3. Museum review: Briefly discuss the holdings of the museum. In what period or periods of art is the museum particularly strong? Who are the major artists represented? Is there a featured exhibit on display in the museum?

4. Gallery review: Most galleries will feature works by contemporary artists. Discuss the artists being shown at the gallery. How would you describe the style of the artist(s)?

5. Choose two works of art by two different artists to compare and contrast:  describe, discuss, and analyze the chosen works of art; include period, techniques, style, material, content, purpose, and evaluation of the works. This comparison should be the bulk of your review.  Specifically describe each work of art.

6. Read other art reviews -- both of the artist(s) you are reviewing and other artists. Sources include the local newspapers, weekly news magazines, local magazines, art journals, and art books. Visit the museum shop for more information, postcards of art work, etc.

7. Interview the curator or a docent in the museum, the gallery owner, or the artist, if possible.

8. If you use quotes or paraphrases from outside sources in your review, document them according to MLA Style.
