Canterbury pilgrims Group 1: "The Miller's Tale"

Group 2: "The Wife of Bath's Tale"

Group 3: "The Nun's Priest's Tale"

Group 4: "The Pardoner's Tale"

Each student in the group will read and write a precis of a different critical article on the tale assigned. Make copies of your precis for group members, so the group can discuss the tale.

Fill out the Canterbury Tales Worksheet to aid you in preparing your panel discussion.

 Each group is responsible for a 20-30 minute report. Each member of the group must contribute orally to the discussion (you might want to divvy up questions after the group has come to a consensus on the answers).

 1. Describe the teller of the tale physically and psychologically.

 2. Briefly summarize the tale.

 3. What is the genre of the tale? What are the general conventions of the genre? How does the tale exhibit those conventions?

 4. What happens in the prologue to the tale? How does the prologue affect or comment upon the telling of the tale?

 5. How does the teller's character affect the telling of the tale? Why does the teller choose this particular tale to tell?

 6. What  values are conveyed in the tale? What values or ideas are satirized in the tale? How?

 7. How does the tale fit into the overall scheme of The Canterbury Tales?

 8. Did you enjoy the tale? Why or why not?
