CAREER INVESTIGATION 

BRAINSTORMING
1. Choose a Career Cluster from among the  following:
     a. HUMAN SERVICES: education, social services, criminal justice, etc.
     b. HEALTH SERVICES: medicine, nursing, allied health,  gerontology, veterinary sciences, environmental services, etc.
     c. INFORMATION/COMMUNICATIONS/ENTERTAINMENT: journalism, media, advertising, research, the arts, etc.
     d. BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY: finance, manufacturing, retail, trade, engineering, construction, etc.
    
e. GOVERNMENT: politics, diplomacy, international relations, etc.

2. With other members of your cluster, brainstorm about possible career possibilities, area employers who hire workers in the field you are interested in, skills necessary for employment in the field, etc.  Hand-in brainstorming report at end of class.

3. Prepare questions for Career Center representative.

4. Send Professional E-Mail to Instructor detailing focus of Career Investigation

FIELD STUDY: INTERVIEW OBSERVATION AND RESEARCH
4. Make an appointment to interview and/or shadow someone in the career you are investigating. See Guidelines for Field Study.

5. Prepare interview questions to ask professional, send copy to Instructor via e-mail.

6. Engage in field research, shadowing and interviewing.  Complete Field Report Form.

RESUME AND LETTER OF APPLICATION
7. Prepare a resume. Chronological, emphatic or scannable resumes (see TBH pp. 495-99) are all acceptable.  You may also use a resume template from Microsoft WORD. ONLY PERFECT RESUMES WILL RECEIVE A GRADE.

8. Find a job opening in the newspaper, from a campus or online online employment service, or choose an organization or company for which you would like to work.  Write a letter of application for a position or internship in the field of your interest (see TBH pp. 491-94).  ONLY PERFECT LETTERS WILL RECEIVE A GRADE.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
9. Create an Annotated Bibliography for three articles from newspapers, journals or books that you have found particularly useful in the process of researching your career.  Use correct MLA format.  Under each entry provide a three-five sentence annotation summarizing the main point of the article and describing its importance in understanding your career choice.  Does information from this source alter your understanding of the career or field?
