Additional Recommendations

The Faculty directory in the server will contain a folder with your login name, first six letters of your last name plus the first letter of your first name. Inside this folder there will be an introductory page that will serve as an index file for your Mini-Site.  This file has to be named: loginname.htm, for consistency through the site. You may put any other folders you would like to have for web purposes inside your folder. For each of the courses you teach you should have a separate folder. Inside each course folder there should be a page that also functions as an index page for the course, the syllabus is always a good starting point. Please try not naming this index pages as just Home Page. By giving the index pages a specific name you avoid confusing the user as to which “Home” you are referring to. These are the rules we recommend for naming files:

1.    Seven .Three, some systems out there are not able to see long file names.

2.    The only special key that should be used is the Underscore “_”. All other special keys can be confused with programming code by the browser or by some systems.

3.    Use a name that is self explanatory to the extent is possible. I like using the first 7 letters of a name, the first 3 or 4 letters for a compound name and the first 2 letters of a 3-word sentence. Sometimes a course code is useful. Just try to make it easy for somebody else to understand your file names.

4.    Even though the web is not case sensitive in general, for human reference we use the convention of using upper case for the first letter of a word. Example: ComServ.htm

You can point to any of the files and folders inside your Mini-Site or any outside links inside the MCC College Site. You can include links to outside the MCC College Site, but only reputable sites are allowed. There is no permission for any kind of advertisement that doesn’t belong to the College or for any type of banner exchange that promotes any activities that aren’t for academic purposes. Your pages may not be used for personal financial profit or promotion. All your pages should reflect the policies and regulations supported by the College. MCC is in the process of developing a college-wide Policy dealing with this issue. Once released this new policy will prevail.

Please avoid using deprecated tags. You can add pictures, animations, music or video. You can also use Java Script and applets as long as that code doesn’t disable the code that is already there. You can decide if you want the Course links in your introductory page to go to the same page for a brief introduction, or you can link directly to the index page of each of your courses. For more technical questions please contact web development and we will be glad to consider your needs.

Your pages will be available to the users on the web site via 5 ways:

1.    From the MCC Home page following the organizational structure or Web flow.

2.    From the MCC Home Page or any other page with navigation buttons, by clicking on Web Site Map, looking for your name, and clicking on it.

3.    From the Web Site Map and using the Web Site search option.

4.    By typing your name in any web search engine out side MCC Web Site.

5.    By typing the complete URL on their navigation field in their browsers and pressing enter.

A few reminders before you begin:

1.    Save often so that you don’t lose your work. Pressing the Control Key and the S key simultaneously is the easiest way to do this. If you wish to undo your last change before you save press on the Control Key and the Z key simultaneously.

2.    If you are going to insert multimedia files on the page they have to be in an appropriate web format. JEPG or GIF for graphics and AVI or MPEG for sounds. If you are going to insert a movie, please stick to Quick Time or Flash formats, other formats may cause problems for users if they don’t have the right plug-ins.  Remember to include these new files in the copy you give to me or to upload them when you are using File ransfer Protocol.
