How to use CuteFTP

CuteFTP is shareware client software created by GlobalSCAPE, INC. You may go to their web site at http://www.globalscape.com/ and download their latest version. Have in mind that if you download the latest version, you will need to buy it.

Before you begin using the FTP Client:

Make new folder in your “My documents Folder” in the hard drive and name it WebSite. Make a new folder inside the new WebSite folder and name it your assigned web site folder. This will become your Site Label. The path to this folder will become your Local Root Directory.

To set up the MCC Web Site FTP

Launch the CuteFTP Client by selecting CuteFTP from the Program Menu and clicking on Yellow Icon for CuteFTP.

When the program opens you will be at the Site Manager Window.

1.    Create a new folder by clicking on the 'Personal Sites' folder on the FTP Site Manager directory tree, then click the  ‘Add Folder’ button.  Enter “MCC” and click ‘OK’.  Click on the MCC folder to select it.

2.    Click the ‘Add Site’ button. Enter WEBMCC for your site in the ‘Site Label’ field.

3.    Enter the FTP server address in the ‘Host Address’ field. Do not type in ftp:// or http:// before the server address.

4.    Enter the User I.D. in the ‘User I.D.’ field.  The User I.D. provided for you is case sensitive.

5.    Enter the password in the ‘Password’ field.  The password is case sensitive.

6.    Enter USER Folder path in ‘Initial Remote Directory” field.

7.    Click on the ellipsis (3 dots) at the end of the ‘Initial Local Directory’ field. Look for the directory you created at the beginning of the procedure and click OK.

8.    Click ‘OK’ again.

9.    To connect to your new site, highlight the site name in the right window and push the ‘Connect’ button.

10.           When it opens it will have two windowpanes. The left side pane will always be your side and the right side pane will always be the server site. You are connected if you don’t get any error messages and you can see your FTP folder Path on the right and the folder you created at the left.

NOTE: If you get error messages and can not connect, please contact me.

Transferring Files

The first thing you should do is transfer the original server files to the directory you are using to edit the web pages. You will be transferring files from the right side pane to the left side pane. This will be the original file(s) of your web page.

NOTE: If you are in charged of a full directory, please copy every file and folder that belongs to your site.

There are five methods of transferring files:

Option 1:   Drag and Drop.  Click to highlight the file that you want to transfer.  Using your left mouse button,  “grab” the highlighted file, drag the file to the opposite window, and drop the file anywhere in that window.

Option 2:   Menu/Tool Bar.  Highlight the files you want to transfer.  To use the Menu Bar, click on ‘Commands’ then ‘Upload or Download’.  To use the Tool Bar, click the Upload or Download button (looks like an arrow pointing up or down).

Option 3:   Double-click the File.  Highlight the file you want to transfer and double click.  NOTE: The double-click Action feature must be set to 'Transfer' for this to work.  From the Menu Bar, click FTP/Settings/Options/Advanced to see if 'Transfer' is selected in the double-click Action box.

Option 4:   Using Queue to Transfer.  Highlight the file you want to transfer and drag it to the Queue window.  Click Queue/Transfer Queue to transfer the file.

Option 5:   Right-click pop up menu. Highlight the file and RIGHT click then select transfer from the pop up menu.

At this point you can minimize the FTP Client or close it.

Please make extra copies of all the files necessary for your pages before you make any changes to them. To make copies of your files, minimize or close the FTP client and use your regular method for copying files to a safe place. This step ensures that if something happens to the files while editing them you can always start again from an original copy. You are responsible for the originals of your pages. If you have any questions or doubts about editing your files, refer to the Web Editing Instructions or contact the Web Development Team by placing a Help Request on the Intranet.

Proceed to make changes to the files using your regular Web editor. Please remember that if you add new graphics to your site, you will have to include them in your next FTP transfer.

When you are done with the changes, use the same steps above except this time transfer the files from the left side pane to the right side pane.

The client will ask you if you want to upload the file(s). Click yes.

The editor will ask you if you want to overwrite the files, click on the ‘Overwrite’ button or the ‘Skip’ button if you want to, you may check the box that says ‘All’. This is irreversible; once you have transferred the files to the server your site is live.

Check the site to make sure that everything is working correctly by opening the browser and navigating to your page. If you find that there are any problems, FTP the original version and contact the Web Development Team for help.
